AiTLE & William Jessup University (WJU): 1 Million HKD Scholarship Computer Science Competition for High School students 高中學生「一百萬元港幣獎學金」電腦科學比賽

Calling talented Hong Kong and Macau high school student designers, makers and leaders. The goal of the competition is to bring high school students in Hong Kong and Macau together to develop innovative and entrepreneurial Mobile APP ideas. William Jessup University (WJU) & AiTLE, along with the U.S. Consulate of General – Hong Kong & Macau, Inno Space & HkedCity will provide students with resources to convert their ideas into reality. Winning team of Category A (in a team of 4 Form 6 students) will receive a 1,000,000 HKD scholarship to attend WJU in California.

Below is the competition details :

  • Eligibility of Participants:
    • Full Time Secondary 4, 5, or 6 students @ school in Hong Kong and Macau
    • Application must through school
      • School :
        • Local schools in Hong Kong and Macau including all government, aided (including special schools), caput and schools under the Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS)
        • International Schools in Hong Kong and Macau
      • Each school must have a teacher in charge as the main contact point for the competition
    • Participants must be in a team of 4 full-time students
      • Category A : Form 6 students
        • Each team in Category A must be in a team of 4 Form 6 Students
      • Category B : Form 4 or Form 5 students
        • Each team in Category B must be in a team of 4 Form 4 and/or 5 students
    • To encourage more Form 6 students to join the competition, the competition accept schools to apply in one the following team combinations :
      • 1 team
        • 1 team of Cat. A
        • 1 team of Cat. B
      • 2 teams
        • 2 teams of Cat. A
        • 1 team of Cat. A and 1 team of Cat.B
      • 3 teams 
        • 3 teams of Cat. A
        • 2 teams of Cat. A and 1 team of Cat. B
        • 1 team of Cat. A and 2 teams of Cat. B
    • Each team may be advised with their teacher / advisor but the work must be the students
  • Presentation, App and/or Products
    • The presented Mobile APP must not be a copy or derivative of a prior product
    • The presentations, and APP interface must be in English.
  • Competition Timeline and Details :

        • A “Resources pack” & a “Submission pack” in softcopy format will be sent to registered school
          • “Resources pack” via Email by William Jessup University
            • help school to have more resources for preparing for the submission
          • “Submission pack” via Whatsapp by AiTLE
            • contain PowerPoint Template and submission link
          • For those registered
            • before 2019-09-20
              • will receive the resource kit at 2019-09-21
            • after 2019-09-21 but before deadline
              • will receive the resource kit soon after registration info is checked
        • Tips : Sooner the registration, the earlier you can received the “Resources pack” & “Submission pack” 
    • Round 1 (Shortlisting) :
      • Submit a PowerPoint Proposal with a 2-5 minutes video
        • PowerPoint Proposal
          • Based on the template provided, explaining your idea using graphics, images, text, audio and video links (max. 15MB and within 15 slides)
        • Video
          • Film a short video of 2 – 5 minutes in length to present your idea.
          • The video must be uploaded to an online platform (e.g. youtube) and set it as “private”, then include the video link in the PowerPoint proposal
        • Either or both in the PowerPoint Proposal and/or video to introduce team members, and showcasing the APP for initial review
      • Submission Period :
        • 2019-09-21 (Sat) 00:00am to 2019-10-03 (Thursday) 20:00pm 
      • Submission Deadline :
        • 2019-10-03 (Thursday) 20:00 pm
    • Shortlisting :
      • Judges will review the submitted work
      • Participating teams will be informed re successfully shortlisted to Round 2 on or not later than 2019-10-09 (Wednesday) 09:00am
      • Participating teams may receive review(s) of their APP
    • Round 2 (Final Judging) :
      • For those teams that shortlisted to Round 2, need to attend the following :
        • Category A (Form 6 students)
          • 2019-10-25 (FRI) 1400-1800 @ Inno Network, 1/F., HKPC, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon
            • Teams will present their APP to the judges from individual table top booths
            • Teams are encouraged to display their work visually, and have a working model available for judging
            • Judges will walk around the various booths and will be scoring the APP based on functionality, creativity among other factors
            • All members of the Team must be present and participate
          • 2019-10-26 (SAT) 0900-1330 @ Inno Network, 1/F., HKPC, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon
            • Teams will present their APP to the judges via Power Point presentation
            • After presentation, will have an Q&A session
            • Besides reviewing the product, should also have focus on App’s marketability
            • One Team member or multiple Team members may participate in the presentation
            • Presentations is about 5 minutes in length. Exact time length will be announced later
        • Category B (Form 4&5 students)
          • 2019-10-25 (FRI) 1400-1800 @ Inno Network, 1/F., HKPC, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon
            • Teams will present their APP to the judges from individual table top booths
            • Teams are encouraged to display their work visually, and have a working model available for judging
            • Judges will walk around the various booths and will be scoring the APP based on functionality, creativity among other factors
            • All members of the Team must be present and participate
  • Awards :
    • Category A (Form 6 students) :
      • Champion team : 1,000,000 HKD scholarship to attend WJU in California
        • HKD 1,000,000 scholarship for the whole team (4 students)
          • each has about HKD 250,000 (about whole 1st year school fee)
          • Scholarship for 2nd year and after will be reviewed at the end of the 1st school year
        • Champion Team participants will got conditional offer to WJU Computer Science Degree Course
          • Conditions for the offer :
            • Acceptable Academic result at their S4, S5 and S6 (if has) school report card
            • Meet English Requirement
      • 1st runner up team : #Tech Camp trip to Silicon Valley (all expense paid) 
      • 2nd runner up team : Technology products
    • Category B (Form 4-5 students) :
      • Champion team : #Tech Camp trip to Silicon Valley (all expense paid) 
      • 1st runner up team : Notebooks/Laptops
      • 2nd runner up team : Technology products

  • Tips:
    • Teams can build apps (PC / Mobile / Wearable) from scratch
    • App focus can be in social, transportation, new habit etc, or teams can solve no challenges but build whatever they think is cool
    • Explore AI, AR, IOT, Blockchain and other cutting-edge technologies in your projects
    • Can also try any Platforms which can help quickly to build the new app

        • Day 1:
          • Arrive SMF/SFO Morning & Check in to WJU dorm/local housing
          • Tech class late afternoon followed by Evening local activity
        • Day 2:
          • California History All Day Gold Rush Event, Evening local activit
        • Day 3:
          • Technology lesson All Day, Certificate Ceremony on Campus
        • Day 4:
          • San Francisco Tour (Golden Gate, Fisherman’s Warf, Pier 39, Museum etc.)
        • Day 5:
          • Silicon Valley Tech Bio Sensor EEG
        • Day 6:
          • Silicon Valley Tech Bio Sensor EEG
        • Day 7:
          • STEM Camp overnight NASA event.
        • Day 8:
          • Flight/Arrival Hong Kong
      • Highlights :
        • Student will check in Jessup on campus dorm, American student culture exchanges and real U.S. campus experience.
        • The Technology classes will be taught by William Jessup University professors/staff with the expectation that students will have a better understanding of the Human Brain to Computer Interface. Students will have a better understand of EEG and EMG technology. The California History course will include an outdoor excursion.
        • Local University food dining experience for students
        • Students will tour various technology companies, museums and visit famous landmarks.
        • Students will participate in a certificate ceremony of participation and accomplishment
        • Students will experience an overnight unique STEM Camp with flight simulators and interact with technology used by NASA and the U.S. military.
      • Remarks:-
        • This is an estimate schedule is subject to change due to schedule dates and changes in participating organizations/outings. Housing for this camp may utilize a mix or WJU Dorms and or Local Housing/Hotels with safety and efficiency of location in mind.
